Doing things the right way Michael Apple 's article is a sharp criticism of the major groups which support the movement away from egalitarianism in education and towards a conservative direction in education reform . Both the reform and the tensions it is causing are attributed to the coalition of four separate demographic groups : Neo-liberals Neo-conservatives , authoritarian populists and a small but visible segment of the professional middle class . These groups are not necessarily aligned with each other across the ideological spectrum however , they have made suitable teammates regarding a more a conservative approach to education . Although they have different motivations for wanting the change , all of these groups have called for less egalitarianism in schools and curriculum in the United States
Neo-liberals support conservative educational reform because it agrees with their core belief of a weak state actor and a strong private sector .
