Disparity and Discrimination

Sometimes the word disparity and discrimination had been intertwined . At first glance it may seem like they are two common and almost equal words . Though the two words have similarities , they also have differences and therefore we should not be confused on about which is which

Discrimination refers to the unfair treatment of a particular person or group , it may refer to favoritism in lay mans term . Another term could be unfairness or injustice and refers to maltreatment . Of the more types of discrimination , racial , religious , and gender

discrimination are the most common . Discrimination makes a distinction without the personal merit of the person or group and could either be direct or indirect Direct discrimination happens when a person is less favored than another that can be caused by religious belief , sexuality , disability and the likes . Indirect discrimination occurs when criterion or practice and other requirement will make a person or group disadvantageous . Such may include giving additional requirements for application to a particular job but knowing that somehow these added requirements will make other groups unable to attend . It had been said that the curse of the criminal justice system is discrimination whether direct or indirect

On the other hand disparity refers to differences or inequality such as in position , degree , age etc . It could also refer to differences in the aspect of economics of countries , province , state and the likes Disparity is not equal to discrimination but most of the time it is disparity that brought about discrimination . It is one major factor that causes discrimination . Racial disparities and other forms of disparity often lead to discrimination especially in the criminal justice system Differences in any form lead to unfair treatment whether in the family or in society . In the criminal justice system it racial disparity that causes a lot of mistreatment for people that are considered to be minorities

Still some believed that disparity is a product of discrimination . It is believed to start in the process of arrest up to the sentencing structure of such case . In the cases of persons who are unemployed , it is believed that they are given less mercy than those who have . Also female serve less time in jail than male counterpart who had committed and is found guilty of the same offense

Whenever someone sees a group of black American being arrested for whatever reason , it is easy for one to say that discrimination exist in any situation whether before , after or during the arrest or justice process . It is easy for us to see the reason behind that conclusion of the arrest . However it may not always be the case . It is of great importance to have an open mind and for information and knowledge of the case in to say that discrimination really exists or if it is just a product of disparity
