The purpose of designing products against crime is to avoid preventable crimes through product modifications , so as to make it harder , or impossible , for offenders to steal or use the products illegally . A common obstacle , however , is the issue of costs (in terms of expensive equipment such as surveillance cameras , which could make it difficult to design effective products against crime (Ekblom , 2008 . theless the strategy is viable since it is based

on anticipation of possible crimes , commonly referred to as `thinking thief (Hardie , 2002 ) so as to design products that discourage crimes , e .g . secret alarm systems to scare criminals

Displacement could play a key role in DAC . This is because criminals are likely to change tactic or shift into safer crimes , after a designed product makes their usual line of crime riskier . For instance , if vehicle tracking devices make carjacking difficult , criminals could resort to simply robbing motorists and running away , instead of attempting to make away with the vehicle as well . However , displacement can only occur when the criminals are able to commit related crimes without hindrance from the products , i .e . a tracking device cannot prevent motorists from being robbed of their money . Therefore , the designs should be backed up with other measures , such as frequent police patrols on highways and crime prone areas
