Philosophical Developments in Africa , the Americas , and Asia

The philosophical development in Africa , the Americas , and Asia had one underlying similarity . This was the fact that each of them was influenced by the negative effects of foreign invasion and the resulting foreign rule and domination which were experienced by these three continents at one time or another . As a result of foreign domination or colonialism , the work of philosophical thinkers reflected the cultural traumas ' that peoples in these three continents experienced at the hands of foreign colonizers (Moore and Bruder , 2005 p

The differences , on the other hand , were observed in the areas or subjects that were emphasized by the influential philosophers in each region . In Africa , for instance , emphasis was given on the concept of person , or what it really means to be a human being . Other areas which were focused on were historiography as well as the dismantling of the nature of philosophy . According to the influential philosophers in Africa , these areas worked against the interests of the African people (Moore and Bruder , 2005

In the Americas , on the other hand , issues such as social justice feminism , Afrocentrism , and social activism occupied the attention of philosophers . The most known feminist was bell hooks or Gloria Watkins and the primary advocate of Afrocentrism (which refers to an investigation of the heritage and influence of African cultures ) was Chaikh Anta Diop . Meanwhile in Asia , the concept of the search for truth or clinging to truth ' as detailed in Satyagraha was the prevalent philosophical thought . According to this concept , the search for the truth not only entails the application of scientific investigation and method but also entails the practice of the virtues of giving nonattachment , and noninjury to develop mental purity (Moore and Bruder , 2005 Reference
