Imperialism is an act or policy by which one country controls another country , usually through military means . During the period of 1877 to 1900 , the United States focuses on imperialistic actions against other countries particularly the Pacific and South Pacific countries

Two of the significant events that showed how the United States has been able to acquire the Pacific and South Pacific islands are : the first is the Treaty of Paris that was signed in October , 1898 this allowed

US Pres . McKinley to place Puerto Rico , Guam , and the Philippines under military control of the United States . The second event is The Boxer Rebellion , happened in 1895 , wherein the United States defeated the Boxers (whose members are martial arts experts , by sending troops composed of soldiers and sailors from eight allied countries . As a settlement , the United States signed and expanded the Open Door ' policy which allowed foreign access to China 's market . The acquisition of Asia , Pacific , and South Pacific followed during the Spanish-American War

The acquisition of Asia and Pacific serves as protection and naval bases to the government of the United States . They also became an important stop-over for coal , provision and repair . In the South Pacific , the United States acquired the right to build bases on the islands of Midway and Samoa , established profitable businesses and huge plantations of sugar and fruits , at the same time implementing powers over the native king of Hawaii .
