lake site Seven residence halls Newly-built Science and Mathematics Building Library art galleries Research greenhouse Computer labs , learning center , concert halls , indoor pool and fitness center Relatively small college with a somewhat isolated ' campus setting Hazard Analysis Natural Disasters North Carolina 's climate is generally good Raleigh occupies 116 .6 sq . miles of land with one mile underwater Raleigh 's climate is subtropical Generally moderate temperature at most times in the year Summers are typically hot and humid Hazard Analysis Natural Disasters (Cont North Carolina has a history of devastation from hurricanes Hurricane Fran in 1996 destroyed hundreds of homes Destructive hurricanes tropical storms hit NC approximately once every 2 years Raleigh residents experience natural flooding from surrounding creeks Floods damage property , halt businesses and result to human casualties Meredith College is exposed to the same natural disasters as Raleigh and surrounding communities Hazard Analysis Man-Made Threats Violence continues to plague the school environment 85 students have died violently in U .S . schools within the last 2 years with 75 of incidents involving firearms Active shooters are the biggest man-made threat to colleges and universities Meredith 's isolated location makes it more difficult to wait for local law enforcement response As a women 's college , Meredith is at the risk of being involved in a domestic violence incidents Response Plan Priorities Investigate and promptly evaluate threats Source Nature Target /s Protect lives and reduce risks of physical injuries Warnings Shelter-in Evacuation Protect student and school property , campus infrastructure and environment Evacuating equipment Enhancing structural integrity Launch possible rescue operations , attend to casualties and assess damages Take all necessary efforts to return campus operations to normal Resources Personnel Local and in-campus Media Alert campus of impending threats State federal authorities Respond to threats Lead post-threat operations Student faculty volunteers Report possible threats to authorized personnel Campus Department of Public Safety Immediately respond to threats reported Contact relevant state agencies Campus Emergency Manager Develop contingency plans on all possible threats On-campus emergency operations center House emergency protocols as the need arises Emergency Management Mitigation Anticipate all possibilities of impending threats Review ways to reduce vulnerability to and minimize impact of future disasters Preparedness Maintain operational capabilities of response methods Plan and conduct activities that enhance student and faculty readiness such as drills Develop mutual aid plans with the city and other concerned institutions Response Execute protocols to save lives and protect property upon threat manifestation Recovery Return infrastructure systems to pre-threat conditions Assess...
