Overview

In the year 1675 there were only more than 16 of foreign born occupants that lived in what is known today as the United States of America Therefore , the issue of immigration in this land is not a new phenomenon . Also , the issue of what motivated our founding fathers to come to this land , this land that promises an opportunity , is the same motivation that draws aliens to come . Furthermore , the characteristic trait of most migrants then and now is that they

are self-motivated as compared to their counterparts who are already contented in their native land

The dispute at hand is about what contribution these aliens bring to the progress of the nation , and the state subsidizing these so called lawbreakers at the expense of tax-payers ' money now , or at the expense of the law-abiding American citizens now . It is true that our laws only reflect the temporal bias of every age , to name a few - The Alien Act of 1798 that authorized the president to expel aliens The Burlingame Treaty of 1868 which facilitated Chinese immigration because of the growing demands for workers The 1911 where Congress enacted a series of restrictive immigration laws The 1924 immigration quota system favoring countries in western and northern Europe The 1965

preference to immigrants uniting with family members already in America (Green , 2003

and the more present day legislation the Illegal Immigration Reform and Immigrant

Responsibility Act (IIRAIRA ) and this controversial issue of the Dream Act Bill ' But all these continue under the ground of nation building , America 's measures of an unfinished nation

There now stand 2 schools of thought in this unfinished business of nation building . Firstly , you look at it from the perspective of what is lawful and what is not . Or secondly , on what contribution it will bring to the nation in spite of its high cost . Or to put it in another sense our arguments should not only reflect our temporal biases , but should also be seen from the perspective of why America is America today This spirit of inquiry , which demands firsthand evidence and does not trivialize opposing points of view , is essential to a society 's intellectual and political health (Jacoby , 2008
