Designer Babies

Adam was created by his parents , just so that his immature and compatible blood cells could be used to save his sister Molly 's life . In general , the technique involves using blood cells from the mother 's placenta immediately after the baby , a sibling , is born , but Molly 's parents turned to a new technique that of using cells from her unborn brother Adam . Referred to as `preimplantation genetic diagnosis , the procedure involved screening the newly fertilized embryo for Fanconi anemia and a variety of genetic diseases , even before it was implanted in the mother 's uterus . It was only when the PGD revealed the embryo to be healthy that it was implanted , with the specific purpose of saving Molly 's life

The question to be asked is this : what would Adam 's feelings have been when he realized that he had been created specifically to save his sister 's life ? Perhaps , Adam would have felt that he had served an important purpose in his life that of providing healthy cells to his sister , so that she could use it to live on and recover completely from her deadly affliction . On the other hand , perhaps Adam would feel that he was an unwanted child , because he had finished serving his purpose in life , and nobody had any need of him any longer . This feeling would in all probability reflect on his attitude and on his relationship with his living sister Molly . Perhaps the sibling rivalry between the brother and sister would be greater than that between other siblings , what with Molly too feeling rather important , secure in the knowledge that her baby brother had been born specifically to save her own life , and not because he had been wanted by his parents . Perhaps Molly would try to show this feeling in countless numbers of ways through her life including making disparaging remarks or discouraging Adam from participating in the activities that she did

On the other hand , if the parents of Molly and Adam had handled the issue with sensitivity and understanding , the relationship between the siblings would be excellent , if not perfect . While Molly would be able to appreciate her brother , and show her appreciation in obvious ways Adam too would be able to appreciate his sister Molly and as a result be...
