Roman Imperialism : Up to 27 BC

The Republic of Rome has been victorious in establishing the kingdom as an imperialist state . History is enough evidence of how the Roman Republic has risen above other kingdoms and emerged to be the seat of power being in possession of a vast and sizeable territory . To describe how the Republic has been in control in the past through execution of powers and imperialism through countless wars , it is relevant to travel back in time and discuss all the events from the Rome that was ' until

27 BC

Most historians regard the period starting from 27 BC as the emergence of the powerful Roman Empire that was deemed to have taken over the Republican Rome . It was during this time that Gaius Octavius was handed over the power to rule the kingdom of Rome . The Senate of the empire dubbed Octavius as Augustus that marks the beginning of his reign as the emperor of Rome . This historical event also ended the countless wars that built the then Republic of Rome as an imperialist state ( Roman Empire ' 2008

According to Michael Parenti , imperialism is a very influential and commanding force that sculpts empires , kingdoms , and territorial boundaries . The purpose of imperialistic attempts and efforts is to satisfy the political , and most importantly , the economic stature of an estate (Parenti , 2005 ) Eve before 27 BC , Rome has been involved with putting up wars with other territories for expansion that would escalate the economy and the political power of the republic . Logically speaking states who own vast territories were in control of most resources whether it is the control of natural resources , manpower , commercial trading , etc . This would enable the state to accumulate superior power over smaller territories because of the extent of what the state can control . Thus , the reason for labeling the Republic of Rome as an imperialist state (Archdruid , 2008

The Imperialist Rome emerged when Rome started to win over parts of Italy . The most significant of all early wars in the history of the Republican Rome was their war against King Pyrrhus the ruler of Epirus and the successive wars , called Punic Wars . As the definition of Parenti of Imperialism goes , Republican Rome was interested in expanding their territory for economic reasons . However , the events ushering imperialism in the Republic of Rome was also tainted by personal and political agendas , and not of a nationalistic agenda . This is because most of the republic did not desire to involve themselves in such a chaotic and anarchic state . However , despite the nation 's wish to stray away from war and chaos , the political leaders during that time wanted to gain more massive power and control . The purpose of imperialism at this point is on a more personal note (Archdruid , 2008

The Romans lost against their war against Pyrrhus leading to their failure to acquire territorial rule over Epirus . However , the Punic Wars greatly contributed to the acquisition of the Roman Republic of sizeable territories . The Punic Wars were fought between the Romans and the Carthaginians . At that time , Carthage was the seat of major trades in the territorial expanse of the Mediterranean (Archdruid , 2008

While the Romans were concentrated on the acquisition of Italian cities and territories , the Carthaginians were expanding their territories extending to the areas in Northern Africa . Although the Romans and the Carthaginians were major implementers of imperialism in the Mediterranean , they were of no threat to each other (Hooker , 1996

At first , it was an unspoken peaceful agreement between the Romans and Carthaginians that involved commercial or economic distribution between two parties , especially in their mutual territorial expanse in Sicily However , a conflict arose when the Romans went beyond their bs and tried to influence other Greek cities despite the opposition of the Carthaginians . The first Punic war broke out because of this and the Romans succeeded in defeating the Carthaginians . From this , we can see how the Roman Republic displayed imperialism as they have aggressively pushed to conquer more territories through influence despite a peaceful treaty with the Carthaginians (Archdruid , 2008

The Roman Republic took advantage of an opportunity to win over territories in the Mediterranean and other areas controlled by the Carthaginians by interfering in revolts against the Carthaginians by some Greek cities . These led to the defeat of the Carthaginians . After this uprising , the Carthaginians continued establishing more territories , such as Spain . The growing power and territorial colony of Carthaginians caused fear among the Romans . The Romans managed to gain allies by supporting and taking over territories that are hostile to the Carthaginians . However , unexpected turn of events led to the downfall of the Romans in the second Punic War . Roman allies sided with the Carthaginians that led to their defeat . The last Punic war was fought shortly after . The events that followed led to the failure of the Republic of Rome , thus the emergence of the Roman Empire led by Augustus (Hooker , 1996

The Roman Republic 's imperialist stature was to gain territories and allies at all costs . Even if it means the disregard of the desires of the majority of Romans and the oppression of people at the lower levels of society and the people that were spoils ' of war . This led to the defeat of the Roman Empire . However , a roman territory established in the eastern part of the world succeeded . It was the different take on implementing laws and policies that determined the success between the two Roman Empires . The Byzantine Empire in the west was composed mostly of the Turks , and the other territories in the west were composed mostly of Scottish population , etc . The barbaric ' west as it was called was always torn apart with the authority of the ruling powers . The handling of power and the secession of power from one emperor to the next was chaotic , therefore causing rifts between parties in the empire Therefore , the traditions and customs of the eastern empire must have been the cause of a successful Byzantine (Word Press , 2008 Resources
