1 . How would you decide between a bonded posterior composite resin and a bonded amalgam for restoring a Class II cavity in a mandibular molar

There are a few requirements that a posterior class 2 restorative materials need to fulfil . Bonded posterior composite materials have unique physical properties and are able to bond . In the past they have shown very encouraging results . They were first introduced in the 1960 's , and since then they have undergone continuous improvements According to the ADA , if the class I and the

class II cavity preparations can be modified appropriately , posterior composites can be utilized to place pit and fissure sealants , preventive lesions and Class I and Class II restorations . The cavity can be modified to restore initial and moderately large caries lesions . The ADA also states that if the proper technique is utilized , then the life of a posterior composite restoration can be compared to that of a posterior amalgam restoration in class I , Class II and Class V situations . Composite materials would bond to enamel and dentine and hence the tooth has to be prepared very conservatively (Roberson , 2002 . There are certain indications for Class II composite restorations including :-

Carious lesions that are small and moderately large , and supports the restoration through enamel margins

Restorations that have aesthetics that need to be considered (such as in mandibular first molar

A restoration that does not need to meet the need of bearing excessive occlusal forces
