Definition Essay

According to Merriam Webster 's dictionary , the noun form of tent ' is defined as a shelter ( HYPERLINK "http /www .m-w .com " www .m-w .com In medicine , it is a canopy placed around the neck and shoulders for the purpose of retaining vapors , or oxygen being administered (www .nlm .nih .gov . The secondary verb form of the word simply means to reside or to provide shelter (www .m-w .com . Other definitions of the word involve objects with a specific shape resembling that of a tent

The word tent is derived from the

Latin word tendere , or the feminine Latin form tentus , which means to stretch (www .m-w .com . In the noun form of the word , this is fitting because a piece of canvas is stretched over a frame in to maintain its shape fitting of the medical definition of the word as well

If one were to look at the etymology of tent , and consider the verb form a bit more figuratively it is very fitting in that sense as well Considering the verb form means to provide shelter the Latin word tendere makes a lot of sense because one may stretch out a hand or provide shelter for someone who is in need . Perhaps another figurative example could be the way a father extends , or stretches himself to the best of his ability in to provide for his family

Sources such as dictionaries are available to provide us with the literal definition of words . Sources such as these are very useful , as is the etymology of such words . Yet , if we look at the word in a more figurative sense we can often come up with something entirely new
