John Tyler felt the destiny of the United States was to expand to the Pacific . He fought for and eventually won the annexation of Texas . This was major achievement and was many years in th making . He had to fight the Whig party who felt the annexation of Texas was not owrth the war with Mexico it would inveitably bring . Thus the rapid expansion of the United States to the Pacific Ocean began and the term Manifest Destiny ' was coined by journalist John O 'Sullivan . This catch phrase combined with government propaganda started the floods of pioneers westward
