Decisions in Paradise , Part 1

Among the issues raised in the case , the major issue would be the diversity of people living in Kava . According to Alex , people living in Kava is divided into four religious groups namely indigenous , Christian Buddhist and Islamic . We all know that religion is one of the powerful forces that drive humanity and which also serves as their guidance Therefore , any clash between the said religious groups only causes great

disaster due to conflict of interest as well as beliefs systems and this seems to be what is happening in Kava as Nik arrived in the said country

The difference in beliefs and interest of people living in Kava creates a big wall that separates one another and later on serves as the root of having an unharmonious environment . It would take a great effort to unite two religions with different belief systems and values which provides their identity and significance . War is inevitable especially in Kava which has no established security forces that will ensure the peace and situation within the country

Moreover , aside from religion , there are still other factors that contributed to the diverse ideologies and beliefs of those people living in Kava . The range of ethnic groups in Kava , based from the statement of Alex , is composed of Chinese , African , French , Spanish and Americans which has its own distinct culture , norms and behavior . In this regard we could say that there is a racial conflict evolving between the ethnic groups living in Kava due to the said differences between the above mentioned races . Racial biases only magnifies the conflict in religion therefore , could trigger war between the clashing groups of people

The lax security and severity of the differences in ideologies , beliefs and races causes the said mess ' in Kava . Although there are organizations that try to surpass the said clash between the various groups of people like the government , community based organizations and faith-based groups still , it seems that the problem has not been solved even for just a small degree based from what Nik observed as he arrived in Kava

Aside from the difference in religion and race , another problem in this case would be the fact that Kava is located in South Pacific where natural disasters such as typhoons , volcanic eruptions , earthquakes tsunami , floods , fires and tornado that causes major damages not only to the lives of people living in Kava but also to their economic development . The said identified natural disasters could possibly many lives of people living in Kava and destroy their houses and other properties . As for the economic welfare , natural calamities damages major crop production of Kava such as coffee , bananas , cocoa , spices and sugar . Just imagine how much cost will farmers incur by the time a tornado struck their banana plantation . Income of every household will surely be negatively affected by any natural disaster . The economic development of Kava depends more on agriculture sector and whatever damages that will happen in this sector will instantly feel by the entire country

The last but not the least problem existing in Kava would be the terrorism within and outside the country . This is somehow almost similar to the issue regarding the diversity of people living in Kava terrorism only disturbs the peace and situation in the said country which causes foreign investors to think twice to invest into the economy of Kava . The low foreign direct investment in Kava makes their economy to grow sluggishly making it very hard for the government to alleviate the economic welfare of their citizen . The main idea here is - with the presence of terrorism in Kava , foreign investors are afraid to establish their business in the said country which supposedly would provide more job opportunities in the labor market of Kava . The more people who have work , the higher will be the possibility of the booming Kavan economy . Moreover , income of every household will start to increase as foreign investors continuous to increase in the market . But these are all just a dream unless the Kavan government could eradicate or at least minimize the terrorist activities within and outside of its area of responsibility . Moreover , the more powerful its security forces will be , the more the government could regulate the differences of various groups in the country

At this point in time , it is clear that the existence of different nationalities and religious groups triggers the social conflict within the Kavan society . This might , to some extent , affect the quality and quantity of output that employees could produce especially if the laborers of a certain plantation or manufacturing firm are composed of different nationalities and religious orientation . Individualism might be nurtured in the production line which will negatively affect the business at the end of the day (Bezrukova , 2002 . Given the low productivity of Kavan workers due to diversity of employees foreign investors or even domestic investors might start packing up their capitals and invest to other countries where there is less problem regarding worker relationship . Protection of group interest which serves as their identity in a pool of diversified workers will be the main priority of each and every one worker this is the reason why the diversity of people living in Kava serves as one of the forces that provoked the formulation of the problems identified in Kava . This could be prevented through the establishment of strong core values within the employees and the management of the business . With this , personal interest will no longer matter for the workers , rather , group interest will prevail in the production area of the business which will boosts the productivity of every worker of the business firm

Another force that contributes for the number of business to deteriorate would be the existence of terrorism in Kava . Like what I have said during the first part of this , terrorism causes investors to either withdraw their investments in Kavan economy or think twice to put their capitals due to unstable peace and situation of Kava . Peace and situation is one of the factors that serve to be the basis of most investors in deciding whether or not to invest in a certain country or not (Unitednations .org , 2002 . Moreover , peace and situation reflects how market performs and how much return on investment will investors receives in establishing business in the market . Although there are a lot of possible crops to culture in the Kavan market , or oil site for petroleum products , still , the rate of growth of the economy is less than as compared to when there is no threat from any terrorist activity . Optimal level of domestic investment will only be experienced by Kavan economy through terrorist movement . Terrorism sometimes suggests the performance level of the government of a certain country . Investors will think twice if the government could really provide assistance of their business to become profitable as they start to operate in the market . There is always a risk on the part of the investors on whether the government will hold its words or not . Therefore terrorism can also be classified as one of the forces that contributed for the problems in Kava to exist . The last but not the least force that causes the number of businesses in Kava not to boom would be the natural calamities that oftentimes strike the country . Tornadoes , typhoon , volcanic eruptions , tsunami and earthquake cause major damages on every property that is on its way With this , it would be risky on the part of the investors to establish manufacturing plants or business in Kava since there is a big probability that natural calamities would only destroy or at least make them lose some tangible investments in the market in a form of buildings and machineries (Blogspot .com , 2008 . Moreover , crops are in danger especially for typhoons and tornadoes and millions of dollars worth of crops are at stake on every occurrence of natural calamities . Although natural calamities are inevitable , there are still ways for the Kavan government to attract more investors through lowering down of labor costs in the labor market , offer subsidies and less tariff for export-import multinational businesses or even low land rent needed in establishing facilities and manufacturing plants . Especially for the case of petroleum producing firms , subsidies and low tariff will be of great help to their operation . Therefore , the said fiscal policies might attract more investors despite of the natural calamities that visit their country
