The cost of either the two i .e . death penalty and life without parole cost the tax payer a lot of money due to the general maintenance of the accused person , when in cancer rated . It has resulted in some of for example a state 's project for example building of children 's home improving social services to be neglected so that the money can be channeled to Attorney General Office , prosecutes and prisons

Its been estimated that there are over 20 , 000 inmates facing death penalty and cost estimated to defend and maintain them is scaring over 500milion dollars years and the amount is rising , while there are over 100 ,000 inmates who are on LWOP and it takes approximately 1 .2 million dollars to maintain them till the die at estimated age of 75 , hence when the maths is done it shows that both of them cost the tax prayers a lot of money

IMPORTANCE OF THE STUDY

This research is especially important at this are so as to give a through insight about the amount that tax prayers pay yearly to go to the AG department , prisons department etc so that the state can decide on what areas they can reduce the amount of costs and properly encourage the constituents to either amend the constitution or state laws to chase either of the . This study comes at time when the country is experiencing a decrease in GDP because of high unemployment , soaring of high food prices . Increases in crude oil prices , terrorism etc . and this has resulted in increase in inflation , which will eventually result in the government increasing the amount of taxes so as to maintain and offer the same services to the DP and LWOP inmates

She did a research to show how funds are used or cost the taxpayers to maintain the inmates in death penalty . Her report was titled The Budgetary Repercussion of capital convictions ' This research was able to show /demonstrates how the funds allocated from the other areas in the state budgets so as to maintain the appeals , executions etc especially in law enforcement area , fire service and education . In non-capital murder this requires no more than two prosecutors while death penalty cases require three-four prosecutors and translate to more than 300 of work to be done
