In 1998 , Anthony Porter was scheduled to be executed by being injected with poison as a consequence for the murder of a Chicago woman in 1982 Two days before the execution , a temporary injunction of the sentence was granted to his mental competency . As the lawyers were deliberating over this issue , a group of students from the University of Northwestern started examining this case and interviewing witnesses who had earlier gave out their testimony against the defendant . After a

couple of months , a terrifying truth emerged : Porter was found to be completely innocent and was not involved in the murder . Instead , the students established that the murder was committed by Alstory Simon , who had testified in camera after his wife 's admission that she was present during the incidence . Furthermore , several witnesses who had earlier testified against the defendant admitted that they had not seen the face of the murder and only testified against the defendant as a result of pressure form the police . Based on these new findings , Anthony was finally released in 1999 and Alstory was charged instead . Porter survived this death only as a result of being lucky enough to get a last minute injunction in to assess his mental condition , which gave the students ample time to reveal the crucial evidence that finally cleared him of the charges (Ballard , 2003
