Despite the conflicts between Judeo-Christian and Greco-Roman culture in the past , it stands that both cultures have successfully and perhaps unwittingly influenced each other in some cases . Perhaps it is this cross-cultural exchange that came into Dante 's notice that allowed or inspired him to incorporate aspects of both Judeo-Christian and Greco-Roman cultures into his work

I believe that in comparing himself to the two men who were deemed worthy of the trip itself to the afterlife , Dante though that he

was indeed unworthy of joining the ranks of such esteemed men . He feels that the two men who had undergone the visit to the netherworlds are so much better men than him that he dare not sully their names by ranking himself up among them , a display of humility on his part

Despite Virgil being a pagan poet , Dante thought it best to have him as a guide throughout the fiery depths of Hell as because as Virgil was a born before the light of God , he is then doomed to remain out of the light of God , forever stuck in limbo . Virgil was also best suited to be the guide through Hell as he is the most rational person according to Dante . It would be beast to have him guide , and so too does Virgil think , as he mentions being able to guide Dante so far as human rationale ' allows
