Selecting a Firewall

Firewall is a set of programs located in server to protect the internal private network from the users of other networks . It provides controlled access to the networks . Many parameters are required for deciding the best firewall that suites the organization security policy The organization security policy must be clearly defined . The firewall must be installed in the enterprise after research and analysis of the security requirements and firewall standards

The main question to be answered while selecting the firewall is what does the firewall need to do

for the enterprise security . The main functions and goals of the firewall should be listed (checkpoint , 2004 Some of the expected functions of the firewall are user authentication logging , auditing and providing shield functions . The firewall just operates at perimeter of the security wall . No internal threats can be identified

Another point to be discussed for selecting the firewall is how the chosen firewall will fit into the existing network . The firewall should fit into the existing network without or with minor changes only The firewall must able to support the existing business function without change and affecting the performance . The firewall should have simple graphical user interface to support the operations that can be easily carried on any security management personnel in the organization
