The story , Harrison Bergeron ' is a farcical exaggeration on government control and propaganda with the central theme focusing on equality . The United States , as a nation , has always been hailed as the herald of equality and liberty , but the story sets these two ideas against each other . The story 's central theme revolves around the premise that if we want to have to achieve people are harping on without thinking , is that we have to give up our liberties and that we have to limit everyone to the least common denominator giving up

our liberties and any natural advantages we have over others . These , the story argues , are the leading causes of competition among people and are considered as not an ideal way of life labeling it as the dark ages ' The story further states that people themselves would rather follow the law than allow their natural endowments to shine even if they are the ones being held back and being punished and discriminated against just to keep the illusion that they are all equal and average
