The physical and emotional well-being of employees in a company forms the basis of preserving its collective human capital . The Occupational Safety and Health Administration (OSHA ) directs all companies to follow certain basic regulations to ensure a secure and healthy work environment for employee . Organizational health and safety of employees is also a moral obligation and primary responsibility that every employer has to fulfill . The human resource (HR ) department in every organization has to take appropriate measures to ensure that those regulations are effectively implemented . It should also facilitate a worry-free

The human resource department has to start enforcing its employee health and safely policy , right from the employee recruiting stage . Carrying out a through medical examination before employing an individual would ensure that only physically-able manpower is added to the workforce This can also help bring down employee absenteeism due to medical reasons , since a person with a healthy medical history is less probable to often fall sick . However , this is not to say that physically-challenged people should be completely kept away from being employed in the company . Candidates with physical limitations can also be inducted into the workforce , provided their limitation does not hinder them from performing their everyday professional tasks

The HR department in a company has to support employees with chronic medical conditions and alleviate their situation through empathetic behavior . Although employees with chronic medical conditions may bring down productivity as well as group morale , it does not necessarily deny such employees the right to work in an organization . The company is also obliged to handle the situation with utmost confidentiality and sensitivity , while also helping such employees to acquire proper medical care . They also need to maintain constant communication with the employee in matters pertaining to their state of health and hospital visits . The HR department also has to evaluate the emotional state of such employees and provide appropriate counseling from time to time . HR members should also talk to such employees about their career direction insurance schemes for their treatment and maybe even retirement options in some cases . In such cases , the HR should also guide such employees in telling their families about the current situation

Employees that choose to carry on working , in spite of illness , need reassurance and understanding . The HR will have to adopt confidence-building measures to boost their morale , while also setting realistic work performance goals for them . Care also has to be taken to ensure that there is no discrimination in matters pertaining to general treatment or financial incentives . HR also has to take care of rescheduling and splitting up the workload among other employees , in the event of doctor 's appointment or any other medical emergency (Personnel Today 2007 .
