CRITICAL THINKING Critical thinking has been defined with various meanings but all leading to a similar content . One definition that holds the main essence of critical thinking is that it is the utilization of strategies of cognitive skills that raises the chance of a desirable effect or outcome . It is also defined as the formation of logical inferences . The main themes of these definitions are to seize the idea of an intellectual task that will serve helpful for a specific cognitive activity (Amabile , 1983 . Involving the evaluation of the thinking process , the rational explanation that comes upon making a particular decision , that is the essence of critical thinking . It is not an ordinary conducting of a decision . Critical thinking requires conceptualization , analysis , evaluation , synthesis which in turn applies due to the gathering of information generated by experience , observation , reasoning or reflection . The word critical in critical thinking sums it all up . Being critical requires a keen observation . Being able to see the negative and the positive with regards to a specific task , this creates the presence of critical thinking (Halpern , D (1997 . Critical thinking is an individual act of self-discipline and self-guide that tries to reason at the most advanced level of quality in a way that is fair-minded . Those who think critically most of the time lives with rational , reasonable and emphatic conviction . Awareness of the inherently weak nature of human thinking is critical to assess the truth . People with critical thinking use their capabilities as tools to help assist with proper decision making (Amabile , 1983 . With critical thinking comes the less opportunity to commit a mistake . It sometimes is a method of assurance , a way of weighing different options to come up with a correct action and decision . Man 's capability to critically think is a gift to help man realize the rights and wrongs of life . This critical thinking is a way of assisting man 's mode of reasoning towards a particular decision . With critical thinking , man can evaluate the possible outcomes or reactions that can conclude the specific decision . It is a way of thinking ahead and being more aware . Critical thinking helps man to be more effective with their actions and be more efficient with their decisions that will not produce regret . It is a better way to think . It 's not just a regular form of thinking where one can answer difficult question with just a yes or just no . That 's the difference of critical thinking from just thinking . Critical thinking provides reasoning while regular thinking only involves a simple act of thought that sometimes may lead to bad decisions and if worse , regret . People 's minds sometimes travel even when we 're awake . Daydreaming is the coined term . With daydreaming , people are still thinking , but it does not present logical and critical thinking because a daydream more often than not is a fantasy .
