an attempt to help all of us become better communities of citizens who collectively must undertake the task of educating ourselves , one another , and , ideally , leaders of our schools , universities , business , and government . All are necessary to cast the light of awareness on this often silent and customarily hidden issue of domestic violence
The truth is , that many men and some women , often display intolerance toward those who suffer this affliction . The question almost always asked is "Why don 't they [the victims of domestic violence] just leave Society acknowledges that some people are afraid of high places and cannot climb to the top of a building or become terrified when crossing a high bridge . The mental state of many victims of domestic violence has often been psychologically altered or culturally conditioned and they cannot leave the abusive relationship without help . Victims of domestic violence often do not display rational or reasoned behavior because of a myriad of extraordinarily complicated circumstances . Their mental state has often been psychologically altered by an experience that often can leave them intellectually incapable of making rational decisions regarding that relationship . If society can accept and understand that some people suffer the fear of confined spaces or the fear of flying then society should understand that some people experience the fear of leaving a relationship after being abused
Domestic violence is a perplexing and chronic paradox that has not been approached with circumspection . It has often not received the appropriate concern of many public policymakers . The majority of our contemporary public policymakers in America are men . They differ little historically from most other men who traditionally construct laws that will most benefit those who make the laws . There may be more varied conceptions and convictions concerning how to create legitimate and coherent domestic violence public policies than any other contemporary political issue
The primary impediment to contemporary society 's ability to reach consensus concerning domestic violence is that too much of what has been written about domestic violence , the studies , books , scholarly treatises , and numerous articles concerning domestic violence essentially support the particular author 's previously held , particular point of view . The author 's bias and ardent beliefs often distort much of what is written about domestic violence . This often presents the reading public with two fragmented and polarized conceptions of the problem . Women 's advocates claim that domestic violence is a problem of epidemic proportions for women .
