General deterrence

General deterrence mainly focuses on crime prevention in a general manner . In this case the main aim is not to change the behavior of the offender who has been found guilty of a certain crime by a competent court of law such a person receives a form of punishment that is intended to deter the public and especially the deviant individuals from committing similar crimes in future . For deterrence to be effective the most common judgment

that is usually passed to an individual is death penalty . This form of penalty effectively instills fear among the public and more so to the deviant individuals who are likely to commit such crimes in future . It is therefore a good form of punishment since it deters the people from repeating certain crimes and thus those crimes that are known to attract such stiff penalties become less common and thus the society and indeed the entire nation is spared the agony brought about by such crimes Hood , 2002

Although , deterrence of crime by use of death is quite effective , it has also attracted a lot of criticism from several quotas as some people argue that it does not achieve its ultimate intended goal . They argue that offenders are usually afraid of being caught and think less of the penalties attracted by the crimes that they often commit .
