Abstract

Roger 's person-centered approach uses Empathy , Unconditional Positive Regard and Congruence to help the client to come to their own conclusions to solve their problems

The Egan 's Skilled Helper Model is a 3-stage solution-focused approach where helpee is facilitated by working on the problem issue (s , which are preventing them from developing their potential . This approach is well suited to less time-consuming solutions

Introduction

Every person has the internal resources to help

them grow . In situations , when individuals do not receive favorable environment for these resources to develop or in adverse conditions when individuals do not receive positive regard from others or if their acceptance is made subject to conforming to a certain behavior that they develop problems

Counseling is a planned and structure conversation between two or more people to assist one or more participant to overcome their problems or learn to cope with them . The purpose of counseling is to help the client in recognize and develop their own ability to deal more effectively with the problems . The purpose of counseling is to help the clients understand their situation , identify the options available to improve their situation and make suitable choices to suit their feelings , values and needs . Counseling allows the clients to cope better with a problem plan their own decisions and act on those decisions . Counseling also helps develop skills such as being able to talk about their problems and provide support to others

Counseling can help in many areas but the main aim of the counseling are to help a client feel more confident about his ability to make decisions , becoming more self-reliant , feel better or more comfortable and become more capable of handling life problems in a positive manner without requiring continual help . The counseling approaches can be classified as psychoanalytical counseling , behavioral counseling cognitive behavioral counseling and humanist approach . Carl Roger 's Person-centered approach and Gerard Egan Skilled Helper Model fall under the humanist approach . In this essay , Egan and Roger 's approaches are reviewed and compared

Humanistic Approaches

Several diverse approaches are classified under this category such as Person-Centered Therapy , Gestalt , Reality therapy and Transactional Analysis [Abrams , 2002] . Both Egan 's Skilled Helper and Roger 's Person-Centered Model fall under the humanistic approach . The humanistic model as the name implies views the subject as humans , every person is considered unique , the approaches recognize that people have an inborn self-actualized tendencies , uses no diagnostic labels and focuses on creating atmosphere that is unrestricted , open , authentic and collaborative

The humanistic therapies aim to create a balance between a person and his /her experiences and attempts to empower people to exercise their choice about their earlier decisions and behaviors as they apply to their current purpose in life . Thus , both Carl Rogers Person-Centered Approach and Gerard Egan 's Skilled Helper Approach have many similarities as a part of humanistic approach
