The perspective of the Family Systems Therapy recognizes the family as a major authority that influences the character and personality of man Man is seen as an organism that is part of a larger system that is the family . It maintains the idea that in to understand the way of thinking and behavior of man , the relationship between the members of the family must first and foremost be considered for evaluation . The characteristics and the behavioral outlook of an individual are dependent on the characteristics and the behavioral outlook of his

br family . In addition , the theory sees the family as a system that supports continued existence and balanced and harmonious relationships among the members of the family . To apply this theory in counseling means that the basis in identifying the problematic or delinquent behavior of a patient should not only depend on his personal history and individual assessment alone but should also include that of the client 's family (Corey , 2005

Perhaps the family is a major aspect in a person 's distinctiveness as an individual because of its intimate and extensive connection to man . Man is able to survive and live encouragingly because of the family However , man is also bestowed upon the capability to think unreservedly and act on his own initiative . As a therapist , the viewpoint of the family systems theory should only be taken in part because I personally believe that the family is only one out of the several aspects that could affect the individuality of man . For instance , man 's upbringing by the family may be altered by his exposure to the environment , such as his peers , the educational or religious institution , the community , the government , and even free will , among others . In some cases , the problematic behavior of the client is independent from the family Therefore , the application of the family systems therapy in counseling should be dependent on the nature of the case - if it is deemed necessary , if the family is open to being involved in the case , and if the application of the theory would prove to be advantageous than its opposite to the client

The best example that I could think of is a client under counseling for substance abuse . I think that systemic therapy should be applied in this scenario because the problematic behavior of the client that arises from substance abuse not only disrupts the life of the client but also the balance and harmony within his family . It is important to assess the family 's way of life , day-to-day activities , the quality of relationship among the family members , etc . Family members should attend counseling sessions wherein the therapist moderates communication lines between the client and his family to understand and make assumptions on the behavior of the client . Both the client and the family members should be able to share sentiments and experiences wherein the client was pushed to participate in substance abuse , and in the case of the family , the effects of substance...
