His views on war , optimistic at first , were eventually changed by a traumatic experience involving his regiment on the battlefield . The 28-line poem uses an iambic pentameter its tone and color is hazy and dark , due to the presence of death as inevitability . The first lines of the poem describe the hardships that soldiers had to endure at trench warfare . The First World War mainly utilized trenches as means of defense against oncoming enemy troops .
