The 28-line poem uses an iambic pentameter its tone and color is hazy and dark , due to the presence of death as inevitability . The first lines of the poem describe the hardships that soldiers had to endure at trench warfare . The First World War mainly utilized trenches as means of defense against oncoming enemy troops .
