Terror in Frames : An Analysis of Media Coverage on Suicide Terrorism

Abstract

A survey of current literature about media coverage on suicide terrorism was done using selected accounts that critically analyze the content significance and effectiveness of news reports on suicide attacks in mostly the Middle East countries . A discussion on the nature of suicide bombings and the perpetrators was made prior to the analyses . The characteristics and effects of media as a tool for disseminating information were likewise mentioned . The concludes that the issues against media being biased , unbalanced and often deliberate in their reports in to `frame ' the stories within the bounds of journalistic conventions and practices , do have bearing and should be seriously considered within the context of constructing public opinion and addressing policy-making bodies in forming relevant and well-informed decisions on such security matters

I . Introduction

Media 's depictions of recent , as well as past terrorism attacks particularly , on suicide bombings have garnered heaps of opinion from columnists , editors , politicians and private citizens from all over the world . It has been a subject of heated debates on various aspects - whether the information being fed to the public arouse apathy or sympathy , whether reports are biased to one country or another . There has been an increasing concern over how media 's coverage of suicide terrorism is influencing the public 's sentiments about the victims and perpetrators alike .
