Introduction . Strategies and Planning

The beginning of each lesson must start with the assessment planning The teacher has to decide how the most important element of learning the comprehension , can be assessed . However , the comprehension of instructional input is multiple component sub skills structure consisting of a ) vocabulary processing , b ) fluency , c ) predicting , d paraphrasing , e ) summarizing , f ) questioning /clarifying , g comparing /contrasting , h ) analysis , i ) synthesis , and j ) concluding Strategies that lead students to mastering the above sub skills can be systemized and presented according to which particular sub skill

and on which particular instructional level the teacher is working . Thus it is useless to discuss the strategies out of the context of the entire systemic purpose of the curricular delivery

Taking in to consideration the instructional purpose of a weekly unit (Open Court Language instruction , Grade 5 , the following schemata should become a focus on this stage . The first , I consider the specific strategies to be taught /reviewed in the lesson . Strategies develop certain skills that are covered in the lesson . During a given week , I might be working on the following sub skills : predicting , summarizing and clarifying . Strategies are the specific actions that help developing the targeted sub skills . Strategies can be picked up through the best practices database or through the experiential results

Some of the strategies that I use throughout the weekly lesson selection are as follows : scaffolding for the students ' experiences derived and integrated vocabulary (vocabulary as conceptual units of information , Clues /Problems /Wonderings (CPW , and Concept /Questions Board . They further develop into Process Reading , Second Selective Reading , Inquiry Journals /Question /Conjecture , Hang Off Large Group Discussion , PairShare , and Conceptual Reflecting

Grade 5 , Open Court Language Instructions Study Guide

In my planning for the week-long lesson , I would consider the emphasis on predicting , clarifying , and summarizing . One strategy I would use most often is clarifying from the digitized pictures (a notebook computer connected to the large TV monitor and to Internet ) depicting the concepts from the weekly selection (i .e . a man working as a tailor Scaffolding would start the entire process on Monday with the purpose to connect the students ' prior experiences with the present week 's conceptual knowledge . The CPW strategy would be played out as follows The students will be directed to browse the selection and then PairShare (i .e . work in pairs ) for a few minutes to identify each other 's clues about the on the selection (i .e . from pictures ) and consecutively work through each other 's problems (i .e . unknown vocabulary , and wonderings (i .e . questions about the specific parts of the selection derived from the pictures . The teacher would record some of the volunteered information on the board . The example of students ' generated problem /wondering sequence would be
