The Contemporary History of Bahamas
In this paper we are going to review the contemporary history of
Bahamas , analyze its relationship with the USA , talk about the
problematic issues that appear nowadays and analyze its successful
areas . The first part of the paper is devoted to the Bahamian - USA
political , social and economical relations . Than there is review of
changes of the economical situation on Bahamian islands through the 20th
century , and the next part is telling about the contemporary political
leaders that shaped the history of this country during the last century .
The next part is devoted to the greatest successes the country
experienced , and the last part deals with the problematic issues the
Bahamian officials meet .
1 . It 's true that Bahamas has a comparatively small population , and its
economy is still developing nowadays . Regardless of that , it plays an
important role in the political life of its region . The strongest
political and economical ties were developed by The Commonwealth of The
Bahamas with the United States . From the moment this country had became
independent in 1973 , it had followed closely with the U .S interests , but
in some years the country continued its international integration , and

in Grenada , labeling it a "premature overreaction " and declared that
there should be no intervention in the affairs of other states '1
However , in the late eighties the USA and Bahamas had numerous
agreements signed , which dealt with the social issues , taxation ,
defense , investment , aviation etc . The USA also had their air and naval
forces in Bahamas .
Illegal flow of drugs , illegal immigration and money laundering has
always been an issue of concern for both the Bahamas and USA . In the
1980 a program to prevent drug flow from the islands to the U .S
territory was developed . In 1986 a United States Anti-Drug Abuse Act was
signed , which covered the creation of the joint United States Coast
Guard-Bahamas drug interdiction docking facility and the United
States-Bahamas Drug Interdiction Force .
In spite of all the agreements signed and measures taken the American
officials still questioned the Prime Minister 's Pindling commitment to
solving this problem . It led to the strain in the USA-Bahamian relations
in 1987 , when the Bahamas temporarily deprived the USA ambassador of his
airport parking privileges . Illegal migration has also always been one
of the issues that required cooperation between the Bahamas and the U .S .
The flow of the illegal migrants is enormous , and , only a part of them
sees the Bahamas as the ultimate purpose . Others use the islands as a
transition point on their voyage to the USA .
One of the problematic issues in Bahamian-U .S political relations is
Bahamian policy concerning Cuba . American government strongly
disapproves of the Cuban political regime , while the Bahamas have
relatively strong social , economical and cultural...
