How Did Constantine Come Into Power

Constantine or Flavius Valerius Constantinus was born

in the city of Naissus in an unspecified year since the recordings of birthdates at the time were sketchy at best . Son of Flavius Constantius , a Roman officer who went on to become Caesar as appointed by Diocletian (The Eastern Emperor of Rome , he grew up familiar with the ways of the Roman Empire Constantine as son of his father and member of the court was required to present himself and serve tribunates for the empire . As time went by and his exploits broadened , Diocletian aged and infirm , assigned Flavius Constantius to be Augustus or Emperor of the West naming two others as Caesars under him . This brought discontent to Constantine feeling that he was supposed to have been given the rank of Caesar under his father To add insult to injury , he was sent to lead a cavalry charge against the Sarmatians by Galerius (his father 's co-Caesar ) and was viewed as a suicide mission . The future Emperor came back victorious and presented a captive foe to the court . Recognizing the danger of remaining in Galerius ' court , Constantine 's father sent a request for help so that his son could escape his bondage and assist in fighting the Picts in Britain . Through the campaign in the west , Constantius became sick and on his deathbed rallied his support for the ascension of his son Chrocus , the Alamannic king , proclaimed Constantine as the Emperor of the West and his father 's troops followed suit along with the whole of Gaul . Galerius hearing the news could do little to contest the rise so following his advisers accepted Constantine for the sake of peace . There were a number of rebellions in which he remained mostly neutral . He was also demoted to the rank of Caesar twice but the boiling point to this was the persecution of Christians . Later on , Constantine defeated Licinius and succeeded in becoming the sole emperor of the Roman Empire

What Led to the Changes Made By Constantine

Even though he was not a baptized Christian at the time , he was known as the first Christian Roman Emperor because of his acceptance of Christianity . Some say he had Christian ties in the form of his philosophy tutors . Others believe that he inherited his faith from his mother Helena whom he regarded highly in his rise to power
