Conspiracy Theories
A conspiracy theory is one that alleges that a coordinated group is and /or was secretly working together to commit illegal or wrongful actions including hiding the existence of the group and its activities contradicting what is represented as the mainstream explanation for historical or current events [CarpeNoctem , 2003] You would think that modernity would have lessened the amounts of conspiracy theories doing the rounds but this is far from the truth Conspiracy theories continue to exist even with the technological advances the world has witnessed . The reason for this is probably

due to peoples distrust with traditional institutions of authority . Many people are disillusioned with their respective governments . In the United States this has been the case and it has only been recently with Barack Obama 's candidacy that people have begun to be actively engaged in politics . Apart from this cynicism towards institutions and authorities there is also a desire by people to explain a tragedy that they are finding hard to come to terms with or explain . This is the main reason behind the conspiracy theories surrounding Princess Diana 's death
On a personal level , I do not believe in conspiracy theories since anything that is based upon anything other than logic is by its very nature faulty . Most theories are founded on emotions and wild allegations . Take , for instance , the theory that HIV was manufactured as part of a biological warfare programme designed to wipe out Blacks , a theory that was recently given fresh impetus by Rev . Jeremiah Wright This theory ignores the fact that However , as long as people continue to lack faith in their institutions and large amounts of information continue to circulate in society , conspiracy theories will thrive unabated
