himself in case of any eventualities . He may or may not have thought of escalating from a bank robbery situation to a hostage crisis , but anyway , he has come prepared for it . As he panics when the police arrive , he was most probable not aware that a silent alarm was existent in the bank and was used on this occasion Initially , he points the gun to the cashier and demands for the cash However , the cashier before actually handling with the cash activates the silent alarm and the nearby patrolling police arrive in a few minutes . When the cashier removes the cash and just about hands over the cash to the perpetrator , the police arrive and immediately point guns at him demanding that he surrenders . However , in this situation , the perpetrator is surprised , and panics and immediately in to protect him and get away with the cash , takes one of the persons present (most probable a customer ) as a hostage . He places a gun (which is probable loaded ) on the side of the head and demands the cash and a vehicle to escape . The people present in the room identify the crisis and take cover by bending below a few chairs present in the bank
In such a situation it is very important for the negotiator to study the psychological and motivational characteristics of the perpetrator and accordingly motivate him either to surrender to let go of the captive . It is very important to understand that the negotiators perpetrator and the captives are under very high amounts of stress as there are high chances of people losing their lives . The negotiators should study the situation and accordingly apply a strategy in to de-escalate the situation and to resolve the conflict situation (Hammer 2007
