The word democracy was coined in Ancient Greece in the 5th century BC . Democracy comes from the Greek demos "people " and kratos "rule . As such , democracy literally means rule by the people

The Oxford English Dictionary presents a well versed definition and concept of democracy which emphasizes that in a democratic system , power is vested on the people and the equality among the people distinguishes democracy from other systems
