Due to its large population and the size of its economy , China ranks high among countries with the largest number of workers , in both the formal and informal sectors . To take care of the welfare of these workers , China , like most other countries , has instituted comprehensive laws and regulations to govern the relationship between workers and their employers . Companies operating plants in China should respect the right of the employee to choose occupation , take leaves , holidays and rests , contest for employment on an equal basis and work in a safe and healthy environment . Companies which abide with this regulation can expect fewer problems with China 's labor officials who may visit the company to ascertain that the law is being followed . In return , Article 3 of Chapter 1 of the Labour Law directs workers to work professionally , and remain disciplined at work

According to Heuer (2005 , the labour law requires that employees be represented by unions . Plants employing more than 25 workers are required to establish plant-based unions whose officials should be part of the supervisory organs of the organization .
