The individual spirit and how it affects societies pressures is the bases of

every classic novel . Authors such as Nathaniel Hawthorne , Mark Twain Stephen Crane

F . Scott Fitzgerald and Nathaniel Hawthrone all have explored the human condition of

their characters . The inner turmoil of keeping their individual spirit while still being

ahead of life 's expectations . Some characters thrive in societies pressures and maintain

they 're individual spirit and some do not . Some struggle to keep their individual spirit as p

they are swallowed in what society expects of them

The authors who brilliantly weave a great story of triumphant overcoming

societies pressures are found in Mark Twain 's character of Jim fights against the

hypocrisy of slavery where Good ' white folk such as Miss Watson and Sally Phelps

believe in the greater good of separating themselves from Jim and people of his kind

They express no concern against the injustice of placing Jim and Jim 's family in the

cruelty of slavery . Jim 's individual spirit breaks free and he becomes a runaway slave

running away from societal pressures

In comparison to Jim 's sense of freedom is Huck Finn . He is an

uneducated , white poor boy also distrustful of society and its pressures . Huck rejects

societies pressures from the beginning to live his own life until he is forced to live by

Civilized Society ' with the Widow Douglas . Twain wrote The Adventures of

Huckleberry Finn ' two decades before Lincoln 's Emancipation Proclamation and the end

Of the Civil War . Mark Twain wanted to write about society 's prejudice and hypocrisy

It would seem Mark Twain wanted to reveal the fact that it did not get

better for African Americans after the war . Twain also uses Huck to reveal the societies

injustices . Twain uses the character of Huck to explain his apprehension about societies

pressures leading him to question his teachings regarding race and slavery . Jim more than

once chooses to go through hell ' instead of follow societies pressure as well as what he

has been taught . He is able to make his own decisions without restrictions

In contrast and comparison to Twain 's Jim and Huck is Nathaniel 's

Hawthrone 's Hester Prynne . She is passionate with her own thoughts and feelings . She

questions the Puritan 's way of life and also follows it until she becomes involve the

Puritan minister Dimmesdale ' After this affair she allows the Puritans to place a patch

of fabric in the shape of an A ' to signify Hester as an Adulterer Jim and Huck escape

from societies pressures by running away however , Hester remains . Hester suffers

through the humiliation of a trial to find who is Pearl 's father

The author is the narrator of the story . He begins his novel with the

image of a rosebush sitting beside a prison door . Hawthrone uses this image in to

symbolize nature 's ability to outlast...
