In the book , A Global History of Architecture , two architectural masterpieces with distinct style and aesthetics were discussed . The Potala Palace in Tibet and St . Peter 's Basilica in Rome represented the east and west architectural style during their respective periods . For the former , it represents the Tibetan or Nepalese architecture which usually has multilayer and pagoda-like structures . The Potala Palace was intended to be the seat of both political and spiritual power ' in Tibet . Because of this , grandiose and the culture of Buddhism , dominated the overall design of the palace . The scale of the palace was very extensive which is located at the top of a mountain Many would think that it is a fortress because of it is lined with thick , battered brick walls that serve as protection for the inner sanctum of the Dalai Lama . There are two main components of the palace which are the White and Red Palace . The White palace houses large ceremonial halls for prayers , rooms for visiting dignitaries and offices while the Red palace houses the audience hall as well as burial stupas for the dalai lamas ' A sense of elevation can be really seen in the palace due to the different levels of the structures and presence of stairs...
