Small Breeds Are More Appropriate As Pets Than Large Breeds

Among dog owners there is a continued debate between whether or not a small dog is better suited for domestic ownership than large breeds Much of the issue is regarding personal preference , which accounts for a most of the decision , but there is evidence to suggest that small breeds are a better choice in many situations of pet ownership . Examples range from restrictive insurance policies formed on a dog-by-dog basis and new legislation over dog ownership , appropriate dog size for the city or apartment dweller and the cost of owning a small dog over a larger breed . One will find that , based on the given research , small dogs are the appropriate choice for people in a wider variety of situations than are larger dogs

Recently , an increase in the amount of serious dog bites has prompted many major insurance companies to adopt dog-by-dog ' coverage policies . These policies are aimed at excluding breeds that have an innate propensity to bite such as pitt bulls or Rottweilers . Pitt bulls and Rottweilers account for many of all reported incidents of death or maiming . The jaws of small breeds are typically not strong enough to pose a comparable risk compared with that of pitt bulls or Rottweilers A pitt bull is known to have lock jaw ' which is a characteristic that allows the dog to lock its top and bottom jaws in position to keep its grip on the victim .
