Tartuffe as a person of perfection and sees Cleante as a person who is too worldly

Tartuffe as indeed fooled Madame Pernelle , but what they didn 't know is that Orgon believes in Tartuffe more than his mother . Tartuffe thinks he has fooled everyone in the household , what he didn 't know is that Cleante can see right through him , he insisted to let Orgon see the whole scene morally , but Orgon don 't want to listen to him , and continued to believe the hypocrisy Tartuffe is saying

Cleante insist that they

see things clearly , making them understand that they are being deceived , the opposite of what Tartuffe is doing , he is out deceiving everyone , and making them believe that they should trust him more that Cleante

In Act IV , Scene I , Cleante confronted Tartuffe to fix the damage he has done within the family- because of his action Orgon has disinherits his son Damis- and told him that if he was a pious man , which he implies he is , he should do the right thing and settle the argument , but Tartuffe thinking about the advantage of destroying Orgon 's family has decline and said that if he did , people might see him as someone who sticks his nose into other people 's problems

Cleante clearly has high hopes for Tartuffe , he has high hopes that Tartuffe would indeed do the moral thing , a thing a pious man would do but Tartuffe insisted the opposite , and kept on deceiving Orgon and his family

It was too late when Orgon and Madame Pernelle saw that they were being deceived by Tartuffe , it was only then did they realize that they should have believed Cleante

Conclusion

Tartuffe is busy deluding the Orgon and his family , pretending that he is pious and well...
