Are Public Safety and Civil Rights Compatible or Mutually Exclusive The Preamble of the United States Constitution describes a responsibility of the government to protect its citizens . In the past it meant defending the country from enemies while preserving civil rights . Since the tragedies of 9 /11 , however , the protection of U .S citizens has eroded civil rights considerably . Individuals wait longer at airports and pass through a variety of metal detectors in to enter government buildings . Civil liberties are a luxury in to ensure that the public is safe and that

Public protection and civil liberties have always been at odds in society . The right to bear arms has dwindled to only include certain types of arms the right to a fair trial often doesn 't take into account the expense of a qualified attorney . On a local level , police departments frequently conduct checkpoints in to catch inebriated drivers . While the drivers who are sober and responsible still must participate in the screening activities , the temporary detention can save lives . It is difficult , if not impossible , to protect the country as a whole while preserving everyone 's civil rights . For that reason blanket decisions must be made in to benefit the majority - even if a minority of the citizens is treated unfairly
