COMMUNITY POLICING

Contemporary perspectives within law enforcement are increasingly depending on

the relatively new practice of Community Policing , which represents a change

in policing traditions that seeks to involve the community more holistically with the

police officers who serve it in terms of communication and the establishment and

maintenance of relationships . Community Policing is challenging many of the

more traditional areas of policing that have been continued by many departments with

little change . This will examine traditional methods of policing in a comparison

with more

progressive and challenging notions of Community Policing This report 's

conclusion , after reviewing extant literature , some of which is referenced here , is that

Community Policing is a good idea that is stuck in many ways in the theoretical sphere

and is not always carried through effectively into a realistic paradigm Cases show that in

many cases , traditional policing has merit , but that Community Oriented Policing should

have a more predominant presence in training programs so that its true effects can be

accurately measured . These effects may in fact be quite beneficial , as many of the ideas

behind Community Policing seem to form more lasting ties among police officers with

the communities they are serving however , they also do not seem to reduce crime

significantly

Community Policing , as it is widely known , is a way of policing that has been

expanding functionally and organizationally since its first inception and popularization
