Bourgeois is a member of the bourgeoisie . The bourgeoisie is a relatively small group of people in society whose main characteristic is their owning the means of production . There is also what is called the petty-bourgeoisie , those belonging to the lower strata of the class . Included in this class are owners of small stores . These people can also turn into the proletariat . As they do not own the capital , they also subsist on wages , making them prone to the same wage problems the proletariat experiences

According to Marx , the proletariat on the other hand , is composed of the working class , and is much larger in number compared to the bourgeoisie . They do not own capital like the bourgeoisie . The proletariat work for the capitalists to boost the capital (such as blue-collar workers , making them distinct from people who work for the bourgeoisie for administrative or personal purposes (such as housemaids and beauticians . To live , they must sell their labor power to the bourgeoisie , as the bourgeoisie have the means (tools and raw materials . This opens the proletariat to exploitation , as the capitalists ' objective is to gain as much profit as possible by minimizing the expenses . This usually entails using machines in lieu of people , using cheap labor , or division of labor

There is also a group that is called lumpenproletariat . The dregs of society compose this group : prostitutes , criminals , unemployed hoodlums , and the like .
