Sarah Palin 's Resignation and its Portray in the Media When Sarah Palin announced that she would resign from her position as Governor of Alaska effective July 26 , shockwaves were felt across the country . The July 3 announcement seemingly came from nowhere , and , as Palin did not provide a concrete explanation for her decision speculations abounded as to the reasons for her departure as well as her future political plans The press response was immediate , with articles appearing continuously throughout the holiday weekend . This response , however , was far from unified . In

looking at domestic coverage of Palin 's resignation from July 3 to July 5 , two trends were remarked . News outlets centered in the continental United States , such as The New York Times and The Washington Post , and those who mostly used reporters from major cities focused primarily on Palin 's political future . In contrast , those news outlets centered in Alaska (such as the Anchorage Daily News ) and those with a predominantly on-line presence who utilized reporters and sources from Alaska (such as The Huffington Post ) concentrated on the reasons , often of a scandalous nature , behind Palin 's resignation . Using only sources that were published from July 3-5 , in to focus attention on the immediate speculations , this examines these two trends and the validity of the claims in regards to the reporting of Palin 's resignation
