However , finding a nexus between these two objectives has proven elusive for the succeeding generation of educators because it is akin to trying to please two opposing sides at the same time . One side views knowledge

as a tool for intellectualism . This group is not interested in the applicability of knowledge in the real world . The other side views knowledge acquisition with a survival mentality . According to them knowledge is meaningful to the extent that it helps in the advancement of mankind
To balance this , the education system has been designed in a pyramid-like form . At the lower levels , learners are introduced to general subjects , but as learning progresses , the scope of learning is narrowed down in to more specialized areas . A person not familiar with the education system may fail to see the rationale of teaching clinical psychologists algebra . The purpose of this paper is to help such people understand why it is important for clinical psychologists to learn algebra
