Ancient Egyptian art pertains to art forms produced by the civilization in the Lower Nile Valley between 5000 BC to 300AD . The Great Sphinx of Tanis that appears on the picture above is a sculpture made during Egypt 's Old Kingdom , this is the period of the first golden age of Egypt . During this era , Memphis was the capital of Egypt and the pharaohs of this dynasty used the greatest number of stones of all the pharaohs

to built the now collapsed pyramids in Meidum . This was the period of the first great constructions that occurred throughout the Kingdom . This also marked the expanding trade of Egypt . Trade in ebony myrrh and frankincense encouraged the Egyptians to start building better and stronger ships for trade with Lebanon , Ethiopia and Somalia

During the reign of the pharaoh Khufu (2589 - 2566 BC , the Great Pyramids of Giza was constructed with the use of tyranny and forced labor . After his death , his son , Djedefra (2528-2520 BC , ed the construction of the Great Sphinx of Giza as a monument to Khufu

The idea of the Sphinx originated during the Old Kingdom . It is a mythological creature represented by a reclining lion with a human head This figure is closely associated with the sun god Sekhmet . A series of sculptures of sphinx are often found at structures of importance such as royal tombs and religious temples
