After the defeat of Nazi Germany 3 nations , which included The U .S Britain and Russia met in Potsdam , Germany in what , was to be popularly known as the Potsdam Conference . The main purpose of the conference was make strategies for administering the now defeated Germany , this would include signing of Peace Treaties , establishment of post-war , and seek ways of ameliorating the effects of the war
President Harry S . Truman of the U .S took this opportunity to inform Stalin of Russia about the powerful weapon Americans were in possession of and were intending to attack Japan with . Stalin voiced his support for the attack but with a lot of suspicion and distrust . Barely a week after the conference the U .S made the renowned Hiroshima and Nagasaki atomic boom attack . When Stalin learnt of the devastation , he protested vehemently . The distrust between the two countries was on the rise and Russia in particular felt threatened with the turn of events
After this time the Cold War was to become the major dominant issue in the world 's international affairs for several decades , bringing with it many world crises . Such crises include the Berlin Wall , increase in the number of weapons of mass destruction and perhaps the most critical one was the Cuban Missile Crisis
