Cleopatra (Cleopatra VII , known also as Thea Philopator , Philadelphus Thea Neotera , Regina Regum Filiorum Regum ) was a Queen of ancient Egypt the last ruler of a Hellenistic dynasty originated by the commander of Alexandrian army Ptolemy I Soter , who captured Egypt after the collapse of the Empire of Alexander the Great . Cleopatra was a unique legendary historical personage , a fatal woman , surrounded by numerous stories and gossips about her beauty , viciousness , cruelty and snaky cunning

Cleopatra was born in 69 B .C . in Alexandria and was the eldest daughter of Cleopatra VI and Ptolemy XI Alvet , who died in 51 B .C . According to Ptolemy 's last will , after his death Cleopatra had to marry her brother Ptolemy XII Dionis (it was a very common practice in Egyptian royal dynasties ) and share the reign with him . The first several years of the rule of the 17-year-old queen and her 12-year-old brother were marked by economic difficulties , crop failures and famine due to bad weather conditions and numerous floods , as well as by growing political misunderstandings between the Ptolemies and the Romans . In addition never-ending quarrels and fights of the co-rulers , mostly provoked by their advisors , also affected normal life of Egyptian nation

In 49 B .C , after a massive rebellion act organized in Alexandria by the noblemen who were close to Ptolemy and wanted to steal the power from two sovereigns , Cleopatra 's brother attempted to remove her from the throne and make himself the sole ruler of Egypt . Cleopatra attempted to fight and raise another rebellion movement , but her efforts failed and she had to escape abroad . Together with her sister Arsinoe , Cleopatra fled to Syria , where she started thinking about the revenge and tried to gather military forces in to be back to Egypt and overthrow Ptolemy XII . A year later Cleopatra with her army arrived back to her homelands and settled down next to Alexandria , ready to attack

In the meantime , after the conflict between Romanian political leaders Pompey and Julius Caesar , the armies of Pompey were defeated and he headed to Egypt hoping to find shelter there . In summer 48 B .C . the Emperor Julius Caesar arrived to Alexandria to the Ptolemy XII and ed to find the refugee , dead or alive . In to Caesar Ptolemy 's advisors , Achillas and Pothinus , decided to kill Pompey and bring his head to the Emperor . In turn , Caesar offered his diplomatic intervention as the Great Emperor to solve the problems between Cleopatra and Ptolemy .
