I . Introduction

Classroom management

and discipline are two important factors that have a decided influence upon the character and efficiency of the teaching and learning situations . Classroom management refers to the operation and control of classroom activities . It is relatively confined to the more mechanical aspects of teaching activity . Much of the discussion of classroom management assumes that its sole purpose is to have time and attendance , the handling of instructional materials and equipment , and the control of activities during the class period . The success or failure of teaching is determined often by the way the class is organized and managed . Unless the details of the classroom procedure are carefully worked out , much time will be wasted and little will be accomplished . Therefore , the teacher should thoroughly routinize the details of the daily practice in conducting classroom work or activities . However , the teacher must guard against a too automatic sequence of movement from one phase of work to another , least a sense of monotony develops (see Grambs , J .D . and W . J . Iverson , Modern Methods in Secondary Education . New York : The Dryden Press , 1999 . pp . 258-259 Spontaneity and freedom for the unexpected must always be present to challenge alertness on the part of the pupils . A thorough mechanization of classroom procedure may destroy the spirit of spontaneity

A well-managed classroom will give the pupil rich opportunities for mental growth and development . Good classroom management produces favorable working conditions conducive to good learning and makes school work enjoyable and interesting . The teacher , in the real sense of the word , is the custodian of the learning opportunities of the pupil Progressive education is concerned with providing every pupil with the facilities that encourage learning and opens the avenue for it . The school is looked upon as the agency of society to provide these opportunities . Anything the teacher may do to inhibit these opportunities violates his trust . A well-managed classroom also makes the pupil appreciate the value of time upon which his future success depends . Thus , effective teaching and learning are possible only in a well-managed classroom
