The Roman Empire is known to history as the greatest empire of all time . Rich in culture and advanced in society , this empire had control of much of the known world at it 's height because of its effective military power . The Roman armies had conquered many different peoples by the Third century A .D . and had created an Empire that had a thriving trade system and had a vital culture that had spread to many different peoples as well . The ideas and cultural aspects of the Roman people with some aspects borrowed

from Greece , would spread around the world and created a legacy for years to come . The geographic extent of the Roman Empire was vast and came to be admired by other rulers who sought to conquer and expand their own empires later on in history

The Roman Empire began its expansion in circa 275 B .C . with the gain of control over most of the Italian peninsula . Soon after , the military sought to expand their bs by fighting the Punic Wars in to gain territory . Over the course of following centuries the empire would stretch across Europe , the Mediterranean coast of Africa , parts of the Middle East . In Europe , Roman culture and authority ruled over places as far away as modern-day Great Britain and France , and had conquered places as far in the Middle East as Egypt and Israel . The Roman Empire remained a major world power until it fell in A .D . 476 after being attacked by Germanic tribes

The historical significance of the geographic extent of the Roman Empire is that it changed the world in one form or another for centuries after its fall . At its height , the Roman Empire stretched across most of the known world and traded with China , India , and Africa , thus bringing their culture indirectly to the other places around the world . Cultures would change , political systems and governments would change , and technology would change all because of the Roman Empire 's vast influence on geography and history
