Circe chapter of James Joyces Ulysses
Nighttown , that their fantasies and subconscious thoughts begin to take the better of them . In essence , they are guilty for their thoughts , despite not having done anything wrong in the real life It is midnight when Bloom decides to follow Stephen and his friend Lynch into an area of brothels and slums . Leopold wonders why he is doing it but in reality , it is because deep inside , he cares for Stephen and can see his dead son Ruby in Stephen . Since he feels responsible , he wants to protect Stephen against the tempting

evils offered by Nighttown
At the modern slum of Mabbot Street , near the entrance of Nighttown where drunken , crippled men , women and children live , Dedalus and his friend stagger in after , drunk . The people mock them , and this is where Leopold comes in . Bloom is almost caught off his balance by a passing sander
When the Caffrey twins , friends of Gerty , appear collide against him , he is reminded of what happened earlier with Gerty MacDowell - the masturbation scene . At this , he imagines an interview with his father and mother , where he is guilty for what he has done . His wife Molly , who has been cheating on him , appears in a vision , dressed wonderfully , but joining the group condemning him . Who is truly at fault here ? Despite the masturbation scene of Leopold and Gerty , Molly has been continuously cheating on him , but that is because of his inadequacy . So is Leopold to blame for the event with Gerty
I believe not , but as Leopold has a conscience and a kind heart , his guilt attacks him . This kind of situation in marriages is very real and it exists in many situations for many people in our real world Leopold is put back into the present as a prostitute approaches him...
