The Byzantine style was actually patterned after the early Christian Roman form and style of art , of which the media utilized included mosaics , illumination and sculpture . The most significant influence of Christianity is the religious art in the form of icons . Icons are artistic representation or image of Jesus Christ , the saints and Virgin Mary , which were used for adoration and aesthetic purposes in churches . One of his most popular works as a painter was the fresco painting on the ceiling of the Sistine Chapel which depicts scenes taken from the Biblical story Genesis . Among his sculpture creation , the best known is the Pieta , a sculpture of marble found in St . Peter 's Basilica This popular sculpture of Michelangelo depicts the Blessed Virgin Mary with the body of Jesus in her arms after His Crucifixion . It is now recognized as a true embodiment of art exuding classical and natural beauty . Other famous artists who created great remarkable paintings that showed Christian influence are Leonardo da Vinci , Michael Angelo and Raphael .
