The New Testament was first observed during the middle of the 4th century with the existence of its oldest surviving version , the Codex Sinaiticus ( Trowbridge , 1998 . Greek was the language used in these writings which raised questions because apparently , Aramaic was Jesus language (Carrier , 2000 . Although he may know how to speak Greek , he certainly did not speak with his apostles using this language . This only suggests that the original meanings of Jesus ' teachings were not exactly captured even if they were translated properly
The choosing of the books to be included in the New Testament was also controversial . Bishop Irenaeus was the one who officially pronounced in that the first four books be Matthew , Mark , Luke , and John (Metzger 1997 .
